smudge runs from pp.77-91.

A sample of the text, with illustrations, from p. 185. This page is in pristine
condition, as are most of the pages in this part.

A close up of p. 185, of the area of the page which is damaged on many of the plates
towards the end of the book.

|
This index page appears right at the end of the text. We include it to show the stain
that appears on the last text pages, before the plates, which display more damage, begin.
|
|
This is a close up of the stain on p. 229. Apart from a pinprick, there is little
physical damage other than the water stain.

Plate 1. This is an example of a photographic plate with damage. These are slides of rock
sections. Note the chunk that the water damage has taken out of the top right corner. The
adjacent paper is fragile and powdery, it does not intrude into the photos themselves. The
paper surrounding the missing chunks is stained, and occasionally the stain marginally
intrudes into the photo. See condition spreadsheet for further details.

Another sample of a photographic plate with missing chunks. (Plate 9).
